Description
Gangotri is dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the most sacred river in India. Perched at 3,100 meters, the Gangotri Temple was built in the 18th century by General Amar Singh Thapa. According to legend, this is where King Bhagirath meditated to bring Ganga from heaven to earth. The actual source of the river, Gaumukh Glacier, lies about 18 km uphill and is a popular trek for pilgrims and nature enthusiasts.
